Breakaway 5K First Year
12th of April 2017
This is the first year for the Breakaway 5K put on by the Iowa Wild Hockey Team. It was a very simple route in the sense that you crossed the Women Achievement Bridge, went north along Robert D Ray Drive for a bit, turned back south and crossed the bridge again. The course had more hills than the other 2 runs I did, and I actually liked that part. The weather was a little warmer, but not by much. However, it was better than the 30 some degrees I ran in for the Leprechaun Chase. This race did have prizes for those that finished, and that might have added to the excitement for the avid runners. However, the organizers didn't leave anyone out. There was something for everyone at the end of the race. While I don't remember what the top prizes were (Hockey sticks, Jerseys is all I remember. I don't remember who got what because I knew I wasn't getting them), I went home with the gift bag everyone else got, and at the end of the race, they gave finishers a chip to take to a table and pick a small prize. I chose a flag because that's what I'm using for curtains right now. This flag blocks out more light than the other ones I have. It's hardcore.
Because this is the first year for this race, there was only a little over a hundred who ran it. However, that made for more room for me. On the way of the route, everyone I passed by, I gave a thumbs up to hoping to give them encouragement. I did it to those who were passing me going back to the finish and those I passed as I was going to the finish. It was a friendly race that everyone seemed to enjoy. Being along the river was rather refreshing hearing the waters of the rivers crash into everything from the walls along the river to the waters itself. Parking was easy since I got there so early. I'd say that this race was great, and I hope they do it again next year. I would do it again.
