Go Cubs, Go!
25th of October 2016
I've been a Cubs fan all my life, and I've waited for this time for a while now. My father and brother were always Cardinals fans. I thought my sister was a Cubs fan, but she's a Cardinals fan as well. Don't ask me how I became the outsider. I just grew up always liking the Cubs. WGN broadcasted their games all the time, so summer was pretty much set. Harry Carey was someone I always looked up to growing up. It was his charisma and enthusiasm that got me hooked to the game of baseball. Singing "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" was always something I looked forward to seeing.
I grew up watching the Iowa Cubs, and I would see a lot of them get sent to Chicago living their dream. That's one thing that hasn't changed for me. This year, 15 of the 25 on the roster have made a stop in Iowa for some time. I've seen them play and develop into the All-Stars they are today. It's been great to see many different names pass through Des Moines, Iowa to get to Chicago, Illinois. Names like Greg Maddux, Kerry Wood, Joe Carter, Kyle Schwarber, Kris Bryant, Carlos Zambrano just to name a few. Ryne Sandberg not only managed the Iowa Cubs, but he played at Sec Taylor Stadium while playing for the Phillies affiliate at the time (they were in Oklahoma City known as the 89ers). I feel like even though the Iowa Cubs didn't do well in the minor leagues, the players are for themselves. Not just for themselves, but as a team since this is the one year we haven't traded away a lot of them. In fact, they started in the All-Star game much like the Royals in 2015.
I've been frustrated with the Cubs a lot, and being on the outside look in for the play-offs will do that. Especially since most of my family are Cardinals fans. I wouldn't hear the end of it. Of course, I hardly had any friends that were Cubs fans either. So here's to this being the year that breaks the streak of making it to the World Series. And here's to hoping to break the streak of being without a World Series. GO CUBS, GO!
