The Music of SOA Really Gets To Me...In A Good Way
25th of September 2015
WARNING: Even though you've had PLENTY of time to see every episode, this is to warn you of possible spoilers.
I've probably mentioned it a lot that I'm not a religious man. However, some of the music I hear on Sons Of Anarchy gets to me. I'm not sure if that's what Kurt Sutter (the show's creator) meant to do, but the music is very well liked. Some of the songs will be played at my funeral. What gets me is that I don't gather that most of the characters on the show were religious either. The closest to being religious would be finding out Bobby Elvis is Jewish. However, the show doesn't show him practicing outside of playing a bar mitzvah doing an Elvis impersonation. Most of the music has many religious references in it. Kurt Sutter knew how to pick the bands playing though. They grabbed everyone who watched, and a lot of people were asking about where they could buy the music. The music was a lot of covers that were done in an awesome way to fit the show's format. Katey Sagal even sings a few tunes on the show.
The music is another element that captures viewers into the show. It helps the viewer feel what emotion should be felt during the scene it's playing. The most memorable song is "Lost Boy" during Opie's funeral. When I went on Facebook after that episode, my feed was filled with disbelief and everyone saying that they cried. If you listen to the lyrics, and if you followed the show, you'll see that the music was a perfect fit. A lot of the covers were done with perfection. They fit the bluesy roadhouse type I think Sutter was going for. It introduced me to a different genre of music as well. I've known about it before, and I've loved it. However, SOA gave me a new appreciation for it. If you see an SOA soundtrack, pick it up. It's a good listen. I have one of them. and I'm looking for the other CD. You won't be sorry if you pick it up, but you will be if you don't.
